How cold is too cold to paint outside?

Takeaways
- Read the can. The minimum temperature is on the label, and it’s different from product to product.
- It has to stay warm overnight. A 55°F afternoon followed by a 30°F night can ruin fresh paint.
- Duluth averages about 140 frost-free days a year, from around May 13 to October 1 (NOAA).
- Near the lake, spring days run colder than the forecast for the airport. Plan shoreline jobs for summer.
What temperature does exterior paint need?
Whatever the label says, and it has to hold through drying. Benjamin Moore’s Aura exterior lists “low temperature application down to 2 °C (35 °F)”. That’s one of the lower minimums you’ll find. Other paints and many stains list a higher number.
The number applies to the air and to the surface. Siding in the shade, or siding that cooled off overnight, can be colder than the air around it.
Why the overnight low matters more than the high
Paint doesn’t cure in an hour. It keeps drying and bonding into the evening and overnight. A warm afternoon doesn’t help if the temperature drops below the minimum before the paint has set.
Dew is the other problem. On a cool evening, moisture settles on the siding. Fresh paint that gets wet before it’s dry can come out blotchy or lose its bond. That’s why fall painting days get shorter: you stop early so the paint has time before the dew comes.
How long is the painting season in Duluth?
About 140 days. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Duluth put the median last spring freeze around May 13 and the first fall freeze around October 1.
| Month | Avg high | Avg low |
|---|---|---|
| May | 63.0°F | 41.0°F |
| June | 72.1°F | 50.2°F |
| July | 77.7°F | 56.2°F |
| August | 75.8°F | 55.2°F |
| September | 67.2°F | 47.3°F |
| October | 52.7°F | 35.6°F |
Look at the October low: 35.6°F. That’s right at the minimum for a low-temperature paint, and plenty of October nights go colder than average. That’s why we plan to have exterior work wrapped up by the end of September.
Does the lake change things?
Yes, mostly in spring. When the lake is colder than the air, a wind off the water can drop shoreline temperatures fast. The Duluth News Tribune described the lake dropping temperatures 30 degrees in a matter of minutes, mostly in April, May and early June. On June 5, 2021, the University of Wisconsin’s CIMSS team recorded Duluth Sky Harbor Airport going from 97°F to 64°F in 20 minutes as the lake breeze came in.
For a cabin on the shore, that means a spring forecast for Duluth’s airport can be too optimistic. Summer is the safer bet for lakefront exterior work.
What if you missed the season?
Don’t push it into a cold October to get it done. A job that fails costs more than waiting until spring. Use the winter to get on the schedule early. Exterior painters around here book up for June quickly.

Questions
Can you paint outside at 40 degrees?
With a paint rated for it, yes. Benjamin Moore Aura exterior is rated down to 35°F. The air and the siding both need to stay above the label minimum while the paint dries, not just when it goes on.
What is the latest you can paint outside in Duluth?
Plan to finish by the end of September. Duluth’s first fall frost averages around October 1 and October lows average 35.6°F, right at the minimum for low-temperature paint.
Is it OK if it freezes the night after painting?
It’s a risk. Paint that freezes before it’s cured can fail to bond or look blotchy. Check the overnight low, not just the afternoon high.
When can you start painting outside in spring?
Once nights stay above the paint’s minimum. Duluth’s last spring frost averages around May 13, and on the lakeshore a cold lake breeze can keep things chilly into June.
